Senior Design Engineer

Job Description:

Description: To undertake duties within a multi disciplined engineering office. All work is carried out under the guidance of the Engineering & Design Managers.

The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for;
•The progression of design projects, from initial kick-off to final account.
•Leading a team of design and project engineers, managing projects including management of 3rd party suppliers and contractors.
•Enhancing the development capabilities and performance of the team & the department.
•The design and development of mechanical engineering solutions, including structural components and machinery as required for projects.
•Liaising with clients from initial enquiry in order to formulate technical requirements.
•Preparing cost, time and resourcing estimates for engineering projects and offshore maintenance scopes of work.
•Performing offshore / site surveys as necessary to acquire design input data.
•The creation of project plans, work schedules and work scope implementation methodologies.
•The approval of documents including drawings, calculations, work packages and work quotations/costing etc.
•Decision making on technical and operational issues, mentoring and direction of junior engineers.
•Leading offshore work scopes where required, on more involved technical jobs (crane installations for example) by being present offshore to oversee them.

Main Responsibilities & Key Result Areas : To develop concept designs into working production, where required to organize installation, testing and commissioning of the produced solutions. This will involve but will not be limited to:

•Compilation and review of design inputs and functional requirements to assess the Client’s requirements and devise mechanical & structural engineering solutions.
•Influence clients toward the best solution.
•Prepare detailed designs to suit, including calculations, reports, manufacturing drawings (both component & assembly drawings), design plans, cost time resource estimates and implementation procedures for the job.
•Produce, verify and validate engineering calculations utilizing athcad and 3-D structural and 3-D FEA design analysis software packages – (currently FS2000 and Solid simulation are in use).
•Comply with the necessary international codes and standards, relevant to both oil and other associated industries, as necessary.
•Supervise & organize the manufacture, quality checks and delivery of the required solution ready for mobilization
•Analyse historic and current maintenance data and re-evaluate old designs for continued service or to current specifications if appropriate.
•Carry out site surveys including offshore dimensional and system surveys and prepare detailed survey reports.
•Plan, supervise and review team members under supervision on their input/output data for projects.
•Maintain client, subcontractor and supplier contact with up to date and correct project reporting.
•Provide guidance and technical backup to design team members, cranes contract support engineers and clients, as required.
•Prepare detailed engineering reports (FEED submissions, Work packs etc).
•Control documentation to company and client standards whilst ensuring consistent checking/approval of drawings and data
•Approve installation and test procedures. Supervise the testing of produced solutions as required.
•Assist other department personnel in ongoing manufacture and maintenance projects as required.
•Assist with the development of design team personnel and work procedures
•Assist with the recruitment and training of design staff
•Undertake customer and vendor visits in support of specific projects or business development as and when required. Some International travel is expected along with offshore visits
•Manage offshore workforce on projects. Interact between workforce and client management.
•Investigate equipment and component failures.
•Write technical reports, manuals and procedures for project and maintenance activities.
•Perform risk assessments for field work.
•Produce work pack documents, directly and via the management of your direct reports.
•Prepare draft invoices for reimbursable work carried out by engineering department.
•Control project costs.
•To log and control all engineering department resource man-hours and assign to client / project accounts as appropriate via timesheet control.
•Prepare and co-ordinate of specialist tooling for field operatives.
•Fill position and duties of Design Manager on occasions when required.

Qualifications :Essential

•BEng in Mechanical, Structural or Civil Engineering or a similar Qualification.
•Strong CAD and drawing skills, preferably with solid works. Ability with Auto cad also required.
•Fluent English Essential

Preferred
•Chartered Engineer, or working towards

Experience, Competence, Skills & Knowledge :Essential

•Previous experience Senior Design Engineer or Principle Engineer position
•Experience of stress strain analysis and static calculations essential
•Exposure to oil & gas, offshore and manufacturing environments
•Computer literate in MS Office Packages
•Analytical and mathematical skill associated with large industrial machinery
•Management and decision making within large industrial projects

Preferred
•Experience with hydraulic / electric / pneumatic systems an advantage
•Some degree of practical application experience desired
•Experience of leading a team and having direct reports
