Heavy Lift Applications Engineer

Job Description:

Business Contribution:
Provide customer with safe, effective, and competitive heavy lift solutions utilizing synthetic products.  Maintain and develop current and new design methods, techniques, practices and procedures to ensure the design and manufacture of products which meet or exceed customer expectations.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Support the sales organization by successfully interacting with customers and industry groups across a broad range of applications to identify product requirements and market opportunities.       Area of focus will be heavy lift and installations in the offshore market.
  • Provide detailed technical specifications and drawings for production of products in accordance with given technical requirements, sound engineering practices and design goals.
  • Learn design processes associated with the development of synthetic strength member products and specialized hardware for use in a diverse range of applications.
  • Collaborate with other Cortland facilities in New York, Washington, and Norway in support of company-wide engineering, manufacturing and/or product development projects.
  • Formulate design concept, estimate project cost, and establish development schedule for various sales and new business development opportunities.
  • Develop and coordinate projects, plans, and schedules from conception, design, development and evaluation including new applications, design improvements, and New Product Development.
  • Expand expertise in state-of-the-art engineering and design, manufacturing methods and innovations in materials through technical journals, seminars, advance degree programs, etc.
  • Supervise the preparation of drawings and production of prototypes in accordance with sound engineering principles and project goals.
  • Coordinate concept, design, and development phases of projects to meet established project deadlines.
  • Finalize all engineering documentation required for product release to shop floor or commercial launch.
  • Assist in establishing and/or upgrading internal engineering standards and practices.
  • Stay current in the status of competitive products that may affect the company’s competitive position, evaluate these products, and provide analysis as necessary.
  • Create, audit, and review test standards and specifications for the analysis of design concepts and component assemblies.
  • Assist in developing product cost estimates.
  • 25-50% domestic and international travel in support of customers, engineering projects, joint industry programs and trade conferences.

Required Experience 
 
Required Capabilities:
  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering.  Professional Engineer certification preferred.
  • A total of a minimum of 5 years engineering experience (10 years preferred) with practical experience in heavy lift or offshore installation or other related engineering experience with progressive success in Product Design or Project Management.
  • Demonstrated success in managing concurrent multidisciplinary projects
  • Must show proficiency in FEA and design software tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Creo or equivalent.  Must show proficiency in MS Office suite of products.
  • Must be familiar with heavy lift standards such as ASME, DNV, or equivalent
  • Familiarity with standards governing metals and metal hardware fabrication is preferred.
  • Must be familiar with manufacturing in a Continuous Improvement environment.
  • Must have demonstrated creative ability and good business and engineering decision making skills.
  • Must be able to communicate with team members and customers at all levels within a diverse workforce through demonstrated strong verbal, written, and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as a team member with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work scheduled hours and overtime as needed.
  • Capable of generating and delivering presentations to customers and industry groups.
