COATING SUPERINTENDENT TECHNICAL DEPARTMENTKey Responsibilities:Protective Coating Policies and Procedures:
- Develop fleet wide protective coating Policies, procedures, schedules and processes to ensure optimal coating protection, visual condition and energy efficiency.
- Inspection and Quality Control:
- Inspect areas for surface preparation (e.g., abrasive blasting, cleaning) before paint application.
- Inspect surface cleanliness and preparation, ensuring that the surfaces are free of contaminants (oil, rust, salt, etc.) prior to painting..
- Ensure proper environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) for painting and curing.
- Verify that coatings and paints are applied according to specification, including manufacturer instructions and industry standards.
- Conduct visual inspections of applied coatings to ensure they meet the required thickness, uniformity, and finish.
- Perform coating adhesion and curing tests if different paint makers paint schemes are used on a project.
- Material and Product Assessment:
- Evaluate the quality of coatings and materials being used, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and standards.
- Verify the proper storage and handling of paints, coatings, and related materials.
- Review product data sheets and verify the compatibility of paints and coatings for specific applications.
- Evaluate efficient and cost-effective substrate surface preparation equipment, standardization across the fleet.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Create Paint Maintenance charts for each of Fleet vessels, identify coating suppliers to ensure cost effective coating maintenance.
- Maintain accurate inspection records, including coating thickness, inspection results, and non-conformance reports.
- Generate inspection reports detailing findings, corrective actions, and recommendations for improvement.
- Ensure that coating and painting activities are documented for future reference, maintenance, and compliance audits.
- Non-Destructive Testing (NDT):
- Conduct NDT inspections, including ultrasonic coating thickness measurement to assess the integrity of coatings.
- Conduct pull-off adhesion tests if different paint makers paint is applied.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure that all coatings and paint applications adhere to relevant safety and environmental regulations (e.g., VOC limits, hazardous material handling).
- Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations such as SOLAS, MARPOL, and ISO standards.
- Conduct safety checks on work areas to prevent accidents related to coatings and hazardous materials.
- Monitor and enforce the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for workers involved in substrate surface preparation and coating applications.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with Shipyard, Shipyard contractors, Paint maker inspector and Ship manager to coordinate coating inspection schedules.
- Provide technical support and guidance to ship staff to address issues related to coatings and surface preparation.
- Advise on best practices for coating application, maintenance, and repair, including recommending improvements for corrosion prevention.
- With internal stakeholders, FM Technical, FM Emission & Efficiency, Purchasing Manager, including on timely implementation.
- Maintenance Monitoring:
- Monitor the periodic coating maintenance work done by ship staff on fleet vessels.
- Monitor monthly paint consumption, inventory and supply distribution.
- Review vessels' monthly photos of coating maintenance in co-ordination with Technical & Marine teams.
- Ballast tank, Void spaced, Fresh Water and other tanks coating quality and condition inspection and monitoring.
- Investigation on coating failures in the fleet and draw up a corrective and preventive action plan.
- Review onboard surface preparation and coating application processes, onboard training, and monitoring future performance.
- Monitor hull fouling condition in co-ordination with Emission & Efficiency team, robotic cleaners’ maintenance / performance.
- Training Content Development
- Develop Shore Training modules for Seafarers for improved seafarer awareness, improved planning and application processes for surface preparation & on-board paint applications.
- Train seafarers on robotic hull cleaners' usage, underwater camera visual inspections, etc.
- Participate in Crew Seminars for closer interaction with Seafarers to drive overall cosmetic upgradation performance.
- Develop Training for Office staff for understanding paint application processes.
- Stay updated on new coating technologies, industry standards, and regulations.
- Participate in training programs provided by paint makers to maintain professional knowledge and expertise in coating inspection techniques.
